Welcome to the Park County Commissioners' monthly newsletter.  Use this newsletter to stay up to date on important updates, upcoming events, and the latest developments from your local government.

2024 General Election Information

Important Dates

Late registration begins October 8th

Absentee ballots available in elections office: October 7th at 8:00 a.m.

Absentee ballots mailed to voters: October 11th

Election Day: November 5th, Polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

What is late registration?

According to the Montana Code Annotated, an elector may register to vote or change voter registration information after the close of regular registration and vote in the election if the election administrator in the county where the elector resides receives and verifies the elector’s voter registration information prior to noon the day before the election day (13-2-304). Between noon and the close of business on the day before Election Day, you can complete and submit a voter registration card, but you will need to return to the local election office on Election Day to pick up and vote a ballot.

Late registration can only take place IN the elections office beginning October 8th. In other words, if you need to register to vote or make changes to your voter registration during late registration, you must do so in-person.

Late registration (same day registration) also takes place on election day, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

How do I request an absentee ballot?

The Application for an Absentee Ballot form is available at the elections office and on the Park County Elections webpage. Click here to view the form. The form can be mailed, dropped off or emailed to elections@parkcounty.org

Absentee ballots must be received in the elections office by 8 p.m. on election night (not postmarked by election day).

Be sure to read instructions and sign the affirmation/return envelope.

Absentee ballots can be dropped at any polling place location on election day (in the envelope provided).

What do I need to bring with me to the polling place?

Pursuant to a September 30, 2022, District Court Order, acceptable identification for an elector at the polling place is a current photo identification showing the elector’s name OR a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, notice of confirmation of voter registration, government check, or other government document that shows the elector’s name and current address.

How are County Commissioners elected?

During the November 4, 1986 election, three county proposals on the ballot from the Local Government Study Commission were approved by voters:

  • No. 1: Shorten the term of office for commissioners from 6 to 4 years.
  • No. 2: Local government elections shall be conducted on a non-partisan basis.
  • No. 3: The Commission shall be nominated by district and elected at large.

Fiscal Year 2025 Budget

On Thursday, September 5, County Commissioners signed the resolution adopting the final budget for the 2024/ 2025 fiscal year. In addition to financial information, the budget contains narratives about county department operations and a budget message about the year ahead.

Windrider Transit: New Fixed Route Schedule

Windrider Transit (WRT) has a new fixed route schedule!  Beginning September 1st, 2024, the fixed route bus stop schedule can be found by clicking this link or by scanning the QR code.

WRT fixed route services are FREE, with buses running Monday through Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., making 139 stops daily! This includes 72 stops in the morning and 67 in the afternoon, Monday through Friday.  Saturdays are half days, running from 8 a.m. until noon and including 45 bus stops.

WRT hosts public transit meetings every third Thursday of each month, at 1 p.m., at the Transit Facility – 70 View Vista Drive. If you would like any additional information or have feedback about this program, please contact sraddas@parkcounty.org or at 406-922-5683.

Shields River Road Surface Improvements

From the Western Federal Lands Highway Division newsletter:

Construction operations for the Shields River Road Surface Improvement Project began the week of August 23. Construction included hauling, placing and grading of Aggregate Base from the junction with US Hwy 89 to approximately milepost 2.

The reclaimer will begin pulverizing the roadway at the junction of US Hwy 89. Aggregate placement will continue from milepost 2 working north. 43,800 tons of aggregate base is scheduled to be hauled from Livingston to the project over the next several weeks. Please be careful and watch for large trucks hauling gravel in the area.

How do I...sign up for Document Alert?

“How do I…?” is a recurring feature of the newsletter that provides readers with information on navigating local government.

Did you know you can receive an email alert any time a document is recorded in the Park County Clerk and Recorder’s office using your name? There is no charge to sign up and receive alerts. Document images may be viewed on iDoc Market for a subscription fee, or users may request a copy of the document, at no cost, by calling, emailing, or visiting the Clerk and Recorder’s office. Please provide the document number listed in the alert email.

Please note: Alerts are not retroactive and will only be sent regarding documents recorded after you have subscribed to the service.

Step 1

Go to iDoc Market (idocmarket.com) and click on the shield under "Document Alerts."

Step 2

Login with an existing account or select "Click here to register for iDoc Market" and follow the prompts.

Step 3

Under "Manage your account," select "Document Alert" from the left menu.

Step 4

Select one or more counties offering Document Alert

Step 5

Choose Grantor or Grantee from the field dropdown and enter your information exactly as you want it to be searched. You can choose up to 5 criteria per alert.

Example: "Smith, John" or "John Smith Family Trust"

Step 6

Choose "save." Your information will appear under "Existing Alerts."

You can edit or remove your alerts at any time by clicking on the icons next to a saved alert.

When county residents serve on county boards and commissions, they volunteer their service for the betterment of local communities and Park County.  Citizens are encouraged to attend board and commission meetings, which are always open to the public.

SHIELDS VALLEY WEED EDUCATION FIELD DAY

Join MSU Extension and our community partners, the Park County Environmental Council, Shields Valley Watershed Group, and Park County Cooperative Weed Management Area, for a day of learning and networking at the Shields Valley Weed Education Field Day on September 10th, 2024.  

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., experts will share their knowledge on weed identification and treatment planning, herbicide use in cropping systems, and integrated pest management- (3) applicator continued education credits will be offered.

Key topics include:

  • Weed identification and monitoring: Learn how to identify common weeds in the field and establish monitoring sites to track treatment effectiveness.
  • Herbicide use: Discover the latest research on herbicide use in cropping systems and sustainable weed resistance management.
  • Beneficial insects and pest management: Explore the world of beneficial insects and their role in controlling alfalfa pests, including strategies to address pyrethroid resistance.

QUICKBOOKS CLASS FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES 

MSU Extension Park County and the Park Local Development Corporation (PLDC) are hosting a QuickBooks class for local business owners, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in learning how to use this accounting software or develop new skills in QuickBooks. The class will take place on September 25th and 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day, with one-on-one help available starting at 1:30 p.m.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Day 1 (September 25th): Learn the basics of accounting and how to enter data into QuickBooks, which will help you manage your business’s finances more easily.
  • Day 2 (September 26th): Discover how to use the data in QuickBooks to create reports and get useful information that can help you make better business decisions.

The class will be taught by Wendy Weissman, a CPA and QuickBooks consultant. This is a great chance to learn practical skills that you can use right away to improve your business.
